Students and Policy-Makers: The Future of Insect Agriculture

Students with the “Aggie ACHIEVE” & “MSU ACCESS” presented posters at the NSF ERN Conference in DC in April, thanks to the NSF IUCRC & REM programs.

They also had had a chance to meet with their House of Representative member for their respective districts while there. In total, they visited the offices of seven house of representative members. In each case, the student (as lead) was able to engage with someone from their House of Representative member’s office.

In all cases, the NSF IUCRC and REM programs were discussed and how they have allowed for these incredible opportunities to occur.

Where does insect agriculture fit into the big picture?

Highlights from the conference:

  • a student asked Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA-NIFA REE undersecretary, about opportunities for individuals with disabilities in agriculture.

  • the last question to Dr. Jacobs-Young during the NSF ERN banquet- where does insect agriculture fit into the big picture?

Most importantly- that last question was posed by someone outside of our group!

This means that insect agriculture is a topic that has broad appeal and is gaining traction.
